A Thorough Physical Therapy Evaluation is Where Treatment Begins
Runners can suffer from a variety of injuries and there are numerous reasons why a runner might be experiencing pain. The first thing your physical therapist will do is perform an evaluation consisting of a comprehensive discussion regarding your past medical history including any previous injuries you have had. We also discuss any current symptoms or concerns, training regimen, running terrain, footwear, etc.
Then a thorough physical exam is performed including:
- Strength
- Endurance
- Flexibility
- Lower extremity mechanics
- Examination of footwear and any orthoses if used
- Gait analysis of your running style utilizing video and DorsaVi sensors
Video Gait Analysis
We capture video from several different angles while you run on a treadmill. We then do a slow motion playback with an extensive review on various mechanics to determine if anything may be impacting your current symptoms or performance.
Common components that are identified and may be improved, controlled, or corrected include:
- Posture
- Arm swing
- Instability
- Balance
- Stride length
DorsaVi Analysis
The DorsaVi system utilizes 2 small sensors that are attached to your shins and captures data while you are running. The detailed movement analytics collected include:
- Ground Reaction Forces
- Initial Peak Acceleration
- Ground Contact Time
- Cadence
Runners are always momentarily in a single leg stance position so it’s important to understand what is happening on each side individually and then compare overall symmetry. DorsaVi helps us to better capture what is happening from a force perspective, something you otherwise wouldn’t be able to analyze with just video analysis.
DorsaVi sensors will measure single limb stability through these functional movements:
- Double leg squat
- Single leg squat
- Single leg hop
What do we do with all the information we collect?
We correlate all our findings to identify areas of improvement and establish a treatment plan to optimize your overall movement. This may help to:
- Identify injury risks
- Provide insights to treatments
- Guide your rehabilitation
- Track progress and improve performance
- Facilitate return to sport decisions
